Held from November 18 to 19, 2022, at the DJEUGA PALACE Hotel in Yaoundé, the second edition of the "Fact-Checking Fellowship in Africa" took place this year under the theme: “Towards a synergy of actions against disinformation and online hate speech for peace and sustainable development in Cameroon.”
Supported by #AFFCameroon, this quarterly fellowship aims to train media professionals in online fact-checking and detecting hate speech. #AFFCameroon works to promote fact-checking, data journalism, and digital rights among journalists, bloggers, and content creators across Africa.
The initiative highlights the dangers of spreading misleading messages, falsifying information, images, and videos, deepfakes, sharing acts of vandalism, creating fake accounts, online fraud, and the circulation of defamatory, hateful, and dangerous remarks on social media. These practices especially harm vulnerable populations and disrupt interethnic relations in African communities.
The main objective of this conference was to create and strengthen synergies of action to reduce the negative impact of disinformation on lasting peace and social cohesion.
CAESS, represented by its Program Director, Rodrigue ZOA, participated in the event by presenting several reports stemming from the Center’s research on disinformation and its consequences on our societies in the era of globalization. He also used the opportunity to showcase the daily strategies employed by the Center for data collection and analysis.
