Chad: A Fiber Optic Project to Connect to Egypt and Boost the Digital Economy
Domains: Géoéconomie
Regions: Afrique centrale
Nations: Tchad

Chad is implementing an ambitious project to connect to Egypt via a fiber optic link. This initiative aims to strengthen economic and digital ties between the two countries and boost Chad’s digital economy. As a landlocked country, Chad aspires to establish this connection with Egypt to become "the hub of digital interconnection in Africa." Currently, Chad’s international connectivity mainly depends on its coastal neighbor, Cameroon. This project is expected to improve connectivity and diversify access sources. An enhanced national telecom infrastructure will also improve the quality of services provided. Egypt, on its part, is already connected to about fifteen submarine cables, making it one of the richest African countries in terms of undersea cable infrastructure.

Chad, located in Central Africa, has a developing economy. The country is rich in natural resources, notably oil, but faces significant challenges in economic development and digital connectivity. Egypt, situated in North Africa, has a more developed economy and a strategic position on the continent.

The fiber optic project between Chad and Egypt carries several important stakes. First, it will strengthen economic ties and boost Chad’s digital economy. Second, it will improve digital connectivity and reduce communication costs. Third, it will foster trade exchanges and investment between the two countries. From a geoeconomic perspective, this project will enhance Chad’s position in its sub-region and improve its relations with Egypt.

However, important challenges remain. Security and stability of communication infrastructure must be ensured. Digital capacities of the population and businesses need to be developed. The project’s sustainability and profitability must be guaranteed. In this process, international partners have a key role to play: firstly, by providing financial and technical assistance for project implementation; secondly, by helping ensure security and stability of communication infrastructures. Additionally, Chad is part of the Trans-Saharan fiber optic backbone project. The new terrestrial fiber route will also follow the corridor linking Chad to Egypt through Libya.

Ultimately, this is an ambitious project with major implications for both countries and the region. It will strengthen economic and digital links and boost Chad’s digital economy. Yet, significant challenges remain, particularly regarding security and sustainability. International partners’ support is essential to overcome these challenges and ensure the project’s success.
