Chad has begun the construction of a university specialized in agriculture and livestock, named the University of the Lake. This initiative aims to strengthen food security and sustainable development in the region. Located in the city of Bol, in the Lake region, the institution plans to recruit students from across Chad as well as from Central, West, and North African countries.
The University of the Lake’s focus on agroforestry, pastoralism, and fisheries sectors addresses urgent needs in the region. Indeed, Chad has significant agricultural potential spanning about 39 million hectares. However, the country faces major challenges in food security, notably due to climate variability and land degradation.
The University of the Lake is expected to play a key role in training specialists capable of addressing these challenges. Students will be trained in sustainable agricultural and pastoral techniques, as well as natural resource management. The institution also plans to develop partnerships with international organizations and NGOs to enhance its research and training capacities.
The construction of the University of the Lake is an important step toward achieving Chad’s food security and sustainable development goals. This initiative should help strengthen the resilience of rural communities and promote sustainable economic growth in the region.
