The African Union Support Mission for Somalia (AUSSOM) is now operational, marking a new phase in the fight against terrorist groups in Somalia. This mission, launched in accordance with UN Security Council Resolution 2767, aims to support Somali authorities in their fight against Al-Shabaab and their affiliates linked to ISIS.
Somalia faces major security challenges, with the presence of terrorist groups such as Harakat al-Shabaab al-Mujahideen. The Somali army, consisting of approximately 32,000 soldiers, lacks resources and training, with a shortfall of 11,000 trained troops. The AU mission is therefore intended to bridge this gap and strengthen security in the country.
Indeed, the AU mission will build upon the results achieved under ATMIS (African Union Transition Mission in Somalia). Its objective is to support Somali authorities in combating terrorist groups, enhance security, and contribute to creating an environment conducive to peace and stability.
Thus, the AU mission in Somalia is crucial for regional stability and international security. If it succeeds in strengthening security and combating terrorist groups, it can help foster an environment favorable to peace and stability in Somalia. However, the challenges are numerous, and the mission will have to overcome significant obstacles to achieve its goals.
